The bacterial sublime. Reflecting the art of Anna Dumitriu, a unique ‘infective agent’ in the culture of scientific investigation,
p. 26 – 32.

Excerpt:

“[…] This artwork is only one of multiple examples in Dumitriu’s artistic oeuvre where we come upon the unique and curious combination of analogue handcrafted objects and most current scientific research issues. The textile (and how it has been microbially altered) is both medium and message. Later on we will explain more about this interesting relationship between Dumitriu’s usage of handcrafts and science. Reflecting the material as such, the original technical term “tissue,” a noun whose origin comes from the verb ’tistre’ to weave, can here be taken literally – a tissue culture is produced – on textile.[i] Its purpose is to express the otherwise invisible world of bacteria, in a way that engages a wider audience, without neglecting the complex and amazing world of microbiology. […]”

[i] Dumitriu realized various workshops and events, whose artistic form we will explore further in the next chapter.

With explanatory texts on the exhibited artworks by Anna Dumtriu, p. 6 – 25.
